| There
are many forms of rhinitis that do not have IgE responses.
The treatment, however, is basically the same as allergic
rhinitis -- avoidance and medication.
Drug-Induced Rhinitis
Birth control pills and other female hormone preparations,
some blood pressure medications, aspirin, and prolonged use
of decongestant nasal sprays are just a few medications that
can cause nasal irritation that are not allergy related.
Hormonal Rhinitis
Hormonal rhinitis is usually associated with pregnancy and
untreated thyroid problems.
Infectious Rhinitis
Infectious rhinitis is caused by the common cold or an upper
respiratory infection. The nasal discharge is not watery or
clear, but thicker with a yellow or green tint
Nasal Polyps
In some people, nasal polyps grow in the mucous membranes.
These polyps also can cause congestion and a loss of the sense
of smell. Nasal polyps are associated with aspirin sensitivity.
They can be surgically removed, but often grow back.
Non-Allergic Rhinitis With Eosinophilia Syndrome
is triggered by environmental changes such as weather or atmospheric
changes. The symptoms mimic those of perennial allergic rhinitis.
Diagnosis is made after skin tests come back negative and
a nasal smear reveals the presence of eosinophils. Nasal polyps
may also be present.
Structural Rhinitis
Structural rhinitis is caused by structural abnormalities
such as a deviated septum or a broken nose. This type of rhinitis
usually affects one side of the nose more than the other.
To get relief, surgery may be needed to correct the abnormality.
Vasomotor Rhinitis
Vasomotor rhinitis is also referred to as irritant rhinitis.
Infections are not involved in vasomotor rhinitis. The symptoms
are similar to allergic rhinitis -- a chronic running nose,
sneezing episodes, nasal drainage, and nasal congestion. The
triggers of these responses are numerous:
# air pollution
# alcoholic beverages
# car exhaust
# chemicals
# cigarette smoke
# cleaning solutions
# cold dry air
# cosmetics
# emotional upsets
# laundry detergents
# perfumes
# spicy foods
# strong odors
